Why 5 Gig? You've Got Questions, We've Got Answers
What is 5 Gig internet?
It is a fiber-optic internet connection capable of always delivering up to 5Gbps of data throughput, which is 5 times faster than standard 1 Gig internet.
Do I really need 5 Gig internet?
It is likely overkill for average users but ideal for large families, content creators, professional remote workers, gamers, or households with over 100 devices and intense, simultaneous network demand.
What equipment is needed?
To achieve full speed, you need:
- Coastal Fiber XGS PON ONT.
- Ethernet cables rated for high speed (Cat6a or higher).
- Devices with network cards capable of supporting multi- gig speeds, as most standard devices are limited to 1 Gig.
Can I get 5 Gig speeds over Wi-Fi?
Typically, no. You will not max out a connection over Wi-Fi. It requires a wired (ethernet) connection to reach full speed, though Wi-Fi 6/7 will provide improved performance over older standards.
How does this differ from 5G Home Internet?
5 Gig fiber-optic internet is a physical cable providing blazing- fast, consistent symmetric speeds. 5G home internet is wireless, typically offering lower speeds around 100 Mbps on average.
Special notes about 5 Gig
- All 5 Gig customers are required to use the Coastal Fiber Command IQ app to run speed tests and manage equipment
- To reach 5 Gig speeds on a PC your equipment will need to have a 10 Gig network Interface Card and a cat6 or cat7 ethernet cable plugged into the 10 Gig port on the Coastal Fiber equipment (ONT)
- To reach speeds of 5 Gig on the wireless you will need to be using Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be). There are a very limited number of devices that use Wi-Fi 7 on the market at this time.
